While Knobby was mixing the tracks to Tanguy, Izzy, who’d helped with the recording of the project, dropped by the Bunker to see how things were going.

‘Not hanging from the rafters yet?’ said Izzy, plonking himself down on a chair.

‘I should be so Kylie Minogue frigging lucky,’ said the lad.

‘Why? What’s up?’

‘Can’t seem to get the trumpet to sit right on this one.’

‘Stereo delay, that’s what you want. Cures a multitude of earaches - stereo delay.’

Whether Izzy was extracting the michael or not was something Knobby wasn’t sure about. You never could tell with Izzy. But once applied, the old bugger’s advice was working. Stereo delay was just what the track needed.

‘You know something,’ the lad said, a smile bringing the sunshine back to a face which only minutes before had been dark as a cloudy weekend in Wetwang.

‘I know fuck all,’ said Izzy. ‘Unless you’re talking about sitting in the pocket on a pool table.’

‘You remember that Miles Davis record you once played me?’

‘Which one? There’s a shelf full of them in the cupboard.’

‘The one from the 70s, where it sounds like someone’s moved all the mikes and amps around between the tracks.’

‘You mean On the Corner?’

‘That’s the one. Well, I were thinking that maybe we ought to do something like that. For a laugh, like.’

‘Take on Miles for a laugh? You a penny short of nine bob, or what?’

‘No, listen: we do a track, like. Then instead of moving all the mikes or amps or whatever around and do another track, we get somebody else to come in and do a remix of the first track. Carte blanche. Then somebody else does another remix, and so on.’

‘You’re tuppence short of nine bob, the lad, never mind a penny.’

Despite his initial misgivings, however, Izzy was up for doing something in the 70s funked-up Davis line. And once Tanguy was out of the way, time was spent laying down basic tracks which could then be mixed by anyone who felt like having a go.

Izzy’s comment on hearing the original mix by Knobby:

‘Miles Davis, my arse!’
