Having completed Diddley and The Cataloguer in quick succession, the PRiDE were unsure what the next project would be. Ideas were sparse on the table, and the few which were lying around didn’t seem worthy of a full-blown project. Noggins were being scratched like floors in a chicken-run, but nothing promising was forthcoming.
The PRiDE went retrospective, and started to look back on everything they had achieved so far.
‘You know something,’ the Blackshadow said, ‘we’ve come a long way since the first recordings. It’s a shame we didn’t know then what we know now.’
‘Would’ve sounded a lot better without that Froderick Twatter manning the decks,’ said Izzy, pointing at Zblotnik.
‘Up yer clunge,’ said Zblotnik.
‘So why don’t you take a step back and re-record some of it?’ said Mr Reindeer. ‘Pick favourite tracks from projects, and do new versions? It’ll give you some breathing-space, and you never know - maybe the ideas’ll start flowing again.’
‘That’s not a bad idea,’ said Rex. ‘I’m up for it.’
‘Me too,’ said the Blackshadow.
‘All we need to do now,’ said Max, ‘is pick the tracks.’
‘I’m not doing Bert’s bastard Bolero,’ said Izzy.
But that was the only negative comment. Pretty soon, old projects were being mulled over, tracks chosen for inclusion in the new project.
It was decided early on that only PRiDE tracks would be included. Old pal Jonny Deadpan was gearing up to get married, so tracks from SPECTRAL PRiDE+1 projects wouldn’t be up for grabs. But any PRiDE tracks which had been reworked as part of the Knobster project A Knob’s As Good As... would be fair game.
Eight tracks were eventually chosen, plus a song - ‘Handbags!’ - which had been written by the PRiDE and Jonny Deadpan, but never included in any project.
Work on the new project went well, and recording was completed in July 2009. It was shelved towards the end of August, however, when an expensive MOTU plug-in which had been used throughout proved to be useless after an upgrade in the Bunker operating systems. Eventually a hack was found and things were brought live again in January 2010, but not before the PRiDE had sent an explicit message to Bollockbrain Productions: Don’t ever buy another MOTU product again.
As the project was a retrospective one showing how the PRiDE had developed over the years, the decision was made to call it The Pathway.
