Once Twitch&Sway had been mixed and canned, THE SPECTRAL PRiDE agreed that they’d enjoyed the experience of working with Jonny Deadpan so much, they would record another album with the man as soon as the schedule permitted. This turned out to be sooner than expected.
For some time, the PRiDE had been mulling over a project to do with silence, and how it could be filled with sounds taken from disparate sources. The end result being a tapestry of noises woven together around a central concept of emptiness. So far so good.
The problem with this sort of idea, however, is that if you don’t stay alert and focussed, you end up spending so much time thinking about the concept, no practical application occurs - nothing gets done. This happened to the PRiDE, and the project to do with silence soon lapsed into silence. Ho hum.
Not that they were idle. Far from it. Ever since Mr Reindeer had furnished the Bunker with a Mac, the PRiDE had been toying with loops and samples, just to see how different things sounded when put together. In fact, one of their favourite games was one they liked to call Betrayal. This was a sonic version of the Exquisite Corpse, a collage of loops chosen almost at random, with each member of the PRiDE choosing loops without knowing the choices of other members.
Sometimes this resulted in an outright row. Other times it wasn't so discordant, and before long the makings of a couple of tracks started to appear.
As luck would have it, the Deadpan dropped by the Bunker just as one of these tracks was taking shape, and with his help and some live overdubs, it was soon moulded into a song: ‘Brian’.
This was such a success, the Bollockbrains suggested that the PRiDE and Deadpan go ahead and record another album using the betrayal lark as a modus operandi. Everyone was game, and it was soon agreed that the album itself would be about betrayal.
A point worth noting. As the concept of an album about betrayal took off, the PRiDE thought it would be fitting if they all swopped instruments, so that no one would play parts on their usual intruments, or choose loops created from those instruments. The music would betray itself on every level.
Who chose which loops and who played which instruments on which tracks is something no one will ever know. But of one thing we can be certain: the Deadpan did the lead vocals. The rest, as Mrs Thatcher once said, is Treachery With A Smile On Its Face.
